Tourism as development focus

Tourism is said to be an important contributor to the economic growth in the country. A desired 6% increase by 2010, is expected through the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative of South Africa (AsgiSA). Through the establishment of tourist ventures, providing primary and secondary benefits to surrounding communities, a halving of poverty is expected by 2014, Tourism has an excellent potential to boost economic activities in the whole of South Africa. Social upliftment and tourism is thus attached to the hip.

A challenging goal of 500 000 new tourism jobs was set by AsgiSA for the next 5 years. The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism has also shown their support for small, medium and Micro sized tourism ventures, as a means to alleviate the poverty stricken areas. Seven (7) key priorities in the development of tourism in South Africa include: transport, safety and security, market growth, black economic empowerment, product and business development, information and lastly skills development. The increase in various kinds of tourism initiatives has the potential to re-develop semi-urban and rural areas. Long-term spin-off activities are foreseeable if the technical and financial assistance is made available in the areas with tourism development potential.

The Standerton Area is known for its up market accommodation and historical sites. Grootdraai dam Tourism activities at the Grootdraai dam are made up of water sports such as skiing, wind surfing, sailing, motor boating and fishing.
A few sites are situated on the shores of the dam where campers and holidaymakers can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Few commercial developments exist around the dam. Private agricultural land and surround the dam with nine fishing clubs scattered along the shores.

There is untapped tourism and recreational opportunities offered by the presence of a large inland water body (Grootdraai Dam) on the Vaal River within the Municipality and thereby denying the local community the downstream benefits emanating from tourism related activities and other supporting businesses.
