A significant operation led by the MMC for Community Services and Safety, Cllr Seipati Modise, unfolded on the 14th August 2024 together with various stakeholders, including AfriForum, Kasselman Security Services, SAPS, Team Ngenelela, and Lekwa CSS officials.
The operation was sparked by a crucial tip-off concerning a butchery located in the heart of Standerton. The establishment, initially believed to be a legitimate business, had been identified as an illegal scrapyard operating in the back yard. The situation came to light following several incidents where municipal properties were reported vandalised, stolen and sold at the butchery.
Upon investigation, the operation team uncovered municipal belongings on the premises. The discovery was alarming, revealing a pattern of property theft and misuse that had been ongoing. The illegal scrapyard had been operating under the guise of a legitimate business, causing substantial concern among local residents and authorities alike.
Cllr Modise, expressed her determination to tackle illegal activities and protect community assets. “Today’s operation is a testament to our commitment to ensuring that those who
engage in unlawful activities are held accountable,” said Cllr Modise. “We will continue to work tirelessly with our partners to safeguard our community and restore trust in our public
institutions.”
Following the raid, the owner of the premises was issued with a written notice to appear in court on the 19th of September 2024. The court will determine the appropriate legal action, with a fine of R2500 being sought for the infractions committed.
Concluded, Cllr Modise “We want to assure residents that operations will continue as part of our broader strategy to combat illegal activities and uphold the rule of law. The Community Safety Forum remains dedicated to fostering a safe and secure environment for all residents through proactive measures and collective action.” she said.
