Sep 1, 2023

Executive Mayor Cllr. Louis Thabethe conducted oversight assessment of the newly installed rumble strips on the R23 road network connecting Lekwa to Gauteng.

The installation rubble strips follow Executive Mayor Thabethe’s engagement with SANRAL about traffic calming on the stretch of the road approaching traffic circles at Extension 6 residential areas. This is after two separate accidents, two truck veered off the road crashing into houses while avoiding to drive over the traffic circle, at alleged excess speed.

“We will monitor the effectiveness of these rubble strips in reducing speed when approaching this area and we will be in continuous engagement with SANRAL and its implementing agency on this project as this is a work in progress.

“We have raised quite number of things with them that including possibility of speed humps, lights and traffic police visibility here and we will meet them again when they will be presenting project progress reports.

“We need permanent solution that will enhance road safety in these areas,” he said.

Executive Mayor Thabethe, known for his strong advocacy for community development, was eager to witness the impact these rumble strips would have on the R23 road. With a keen eye for detail, he walked along the road, carefully examining the installation and the materials used.

He expressed his satisfaction with the construction techniques and the quality of workmanship demonstrated by the team. He highlighted the importance of such initiatives and the positive impact they have on society.

He emphasized the significance of investing in road safety measures. He commended the collaborative effort of municipality, SANRAL and the construction company in making R23 a safer road for all.
