The Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure of the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa, led by Chairperson Honourable Carol Phiri, conducted an oversight visit at the Standerton Police Station in Lekwa. The visit formed part of Parliament’s constitutional mandate to monitor and evaluate the implementation of government projects and the effective use of public resources.
The purpose of the oversight was to assess the refurbishment of the Standerton Police Station, and SAPS residential houses to ensure that the upgrades meet the required standards to enhance service delivery and provide a safe, functional environment for both police officials and members of the community.
During the visit, the Committee was taken through the refurbished facilities and received updates on the scope of work completed, challenges encountered, and the overall impact of the improvements. The refurbishment aims to enhance effective working conditions and strengthen policing services.
The Executive Mayor of Lekwa Local Municipality, Cllr. Sifiso Mngemezulu, welcomed the Committee to the municipality. In his remarks, he stated: “We welcome this oversight as it strengthens transparency and accountability in service delivery. The refurbishment of the Standerton Police Station is a significant step towards improving safety our communities”
The Portfolio Committee emphasised the importance of oversight in ensuring that infrastructure projects deliver value for money and meet the needs of communities. The Committee further reaffirmed that the Parliament of South Africa remains committed to strengthening public infrastructure.
