The Executive Mayor of Gert Sibande District Municipality, Cllr. Walter Mngomezulu, together with Lekwa Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr. Sifiso Mngemezulu, recently conducted an oversight visit to the Standerton Water Treatment Works to assess the progress made on the refurbishment and upgrading of the facility.
The oversight was aimed at evaluating the current status of the project, monitor the implementation of the work on site, and ensure that the refurbishment remained on track in line with the planned timelines and objectives.
During the inspection, it was reported that the project has reached 93% completion, marking significant progress toward its finalisation. The refurbishment and upgrading works are expected to be completed by the end of March 2026, with the project now entering its final stages.
Speaking during the visit, Executive Mayor Cllr. Sifiso Mngemezulu emphasised the importance of the project in strengthening water services in the municipality.
“We are encouraged by the progress made on the refurbishment of the Standerton Water Treatment Plant. This project is critical in ensuring reliable and sustainable water supply to our residents. Once completed, it will significantly improve the plant’s water supply and enhance service delivery to the community,” said Executive Mayor Mngemezulu.
The oversight visit highlighted the important role played by Gert Sibande District Municipality as the implementing agent for the project, by taking responsibility for overseeing the refurbishment of the Standerton Water Treatment Plant.
