In an effort to uphold immigration laws and ensure adherence to labour regulations, Cllr Seipati Modise, MMC for Community Services and Safety, headed a comprehensive operation in collaboration with various stakeholders.
The operation brought together the Department of Home Affairs, Department of Labour, South African Police Service (SAPS), Kasselman Security Services, Team Ngenelela, and AfriForum to inspect businesses operating in the Standerton central business district (CBD).
The joint operation was aimed at tackling illegal immigration and verifying compliance with South African labour laws among foreign business owners. Stakeholders conducted inspections, reviewed documentation, and took necessary actions against businesses found to be in violation.
During the operation, six businesses were inspected, resulting in the detention of 7 illegal immigrants and the issuance of fines totalling to R9,000 to employers who hired these individuals.
The Department of Labour inspectors followed up on these businesses regarding wage complaints from employees who alleged being underpaid.
Cllr Modise emphasised, “This operation marks a significant stride in ensuring that all local businesses operate within the legal framework. It serves as a stern warning to those who disregard regulations.” The collaboration among stakeholders underscores their commitment to upholding the rule of law and fostering a secure community environment.
