Sep 27, 2025

IMG 6571On 26 September 2025, Lekwa Local Municipality proudly hosted a Heritage Pop-Up Market at Thusong Centre, an event that successfully combined the celebration of culture with efforts to strengthen the local economy. The programme provided a platform for cultural expression, encouraged community pride, and supported small businesses through the sale of locally produced goods and rendered services.

In her keynote address, the Executive Manager for Community Services and Safety Ms. Thobeka Mtshiselwa, highlighted the importance of cultural identity and its role in shaping communities. She encouraged residents to embrace and preserve their cultural heritage.

“Regardless of where you come from, be proud of your culture. We as the municipality are not ending with today’s event. We are going to create a structure that will focus mainly on culture, as a way of curbing substance abuse amongst our youth. Joining the already existing cultural groups or forming new ones will be a great initiative for keeping our youth positively engaged,” said Ms. Mtshiselwa.

The event was marked by energetic performances from various cultural groups, which showcased their diverse talents and traditions. In addition, market stalls were set up, offering a wide range of locally made products for purchase, providing entrepreneurs with much needed exposure and boosting the local economy.

The Pop-Up Market also created an opportunity for learning, traditional knowledge, and practices with the younger generation. This exchange not only promoted cultural literacy but also strengthened family and community bonds, ensuring that heritage is preserved and passed down to future generations.

The Heritage Pop-Up Market demonstrated how cultural celebration can go hand-in-hand with economic empowerment, while also promoting community unity and youth development.
