Lekwa Local Municipality Hosts Local Aids Council Meeting

Sep 11, 2025

IMG 6425In a comprehensive effort to intensify the ongoing fight against HIV & AIDS within the community, Lekwa Local Municipality convened its Local AIDS Council (LAC) at the municipality’s main administrative building, Council Chamber. The meeting was chaired by the Executive Mayor Cllr. Sifiso Mngemezulu, and brought together LAC key stakeholders from government departments, private businesses, civil society organisations, health professionals, and community leaders.

The primary purpose of the meeting was to strengthen multi-sectoral collaboration in the fight against HIV/AIDS, review progress on prevention and treatment, assess challenges faced by affected communities and coordinate efforts to reduce new infections, also support people living with HIV/AIDS.

In his opening remarks, Executive Mayor emphasised the importance of a coordinated, inclusive, and proactive approach, stating: “The fight against HIV/AIDS is not just a health issue, it is a social issue that requires collaboration, commitment, and compassion from all sectors of our society”.

The quarterly reports highlighted several key developments, including HIV testing campaigns, youth-focused prevention programmes, and strengthened partnerships with local clinics and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

Stakeholders at the meeting shared valuable insights and recommendations, ranging from intensifying educational outreach in schools and all communities to enhancing support services for people living with HIV.

The Local AIDS Council is part of a broader provincial and national framework aimed at coordinating HIV/AIDS, TB and STIs interventions at the grassroots level, particularly in response to gender-based violence. Its role includes monitoring implementation, aligning local strategies with national targets, and ensuring that affected communities have a voice in decision-making processes.

“Our journey towards an AIDS free society is far from over, but together, we can build resilient communities where every person has access to care, support, and hope for a better future. Let us continue to stand united as stakeholders, because only through unity can we overcome this challenge” concluded, Executive Mayor Mngemezulu.
