Operation Shanela is a continuous cleaning campaign driven by the municipality’s commitment to promoting cleanliness, eradicating illegal dumping, and encouraging community members to take pride in maintaining a healthy and clean environment. The initiative also aims to restore community dignity, improve public health standards, and create a safe and welcoming environment for all residents.

In his address, MMC Motaung commended the successful implementation of Phase 1, which covered wards 1 to 12 and 15, noting the remarkable improvement it brought to public spaces and community confidence. “The first phase of Operation Shanela was a great success, and we are proud of the progress made. Moving to rural or outskirt wards is also our priority as the municipality to ensure that every community, regardless of its location benefits
from this initiative. Cleanliness and service delivery should not only be enjoyed in town areas but must also reach our rural residents who are equally important” said MMC Motaung.

He further emphasised that Operation Shanela is not just a short-term cleaning activity, but a long-term commitment towards sustainable environmental management. The programme encourages collective participation with government departments, residents, community groups and municipal employees working together to remove litter, clear illegal dumpsites and beautify public spaces.

Operation Shanela Phase 2 marks another significant milestone in Lekwa Local Municipality’s ongoing efforts to promote a cleaner, healthier, and more inclusive environment. The municipality calls upon all residents to take an active role in maintaining the motivation of this campaign and to uphold cleanliness as a shared community value for the benefit of current and future generations
