Promoting Mental Health Awareness in the Workplace

Oct 30, 2024

On October 23, 2024, the Mpumalanga Department of Health, in collaboration with Lekwa Local Municipality and various stakeholders, organised an impactful Mental Health in the Workplace Awareness program at Standerton Hospital.

The event was officially opened by the MMC for Community Services and Safety, Cllr Corne Stoltz, who welcomed all the guests, thanking them for their attendance. He also emphasised the importance of addressing mental health in professional settings, stating, “Mental health is just as crucial as physical health, and it is our responsibility to foster a workplace environment where every employee feels genuinely supported, valued, and understood in their mental and emotional well-being.”

The primary aim of this event was to inform and empower employees regarding mental health issues that can arise within the workplace. By focusing on mental well-being, the program provided a valuable platform for workers to learn how to identify warning signs, address challenges, and promote a supportive environment.

The event featured engaging role-play activities designed to foster understanding and empathy among attendees. Participants acted out scenarios that illustrated symptoms of anxiety disorders, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder, helping to break down stigma and encourage open discussions about these issues.

In addition to these engaging activities, representatives from various government departments and stakeholders shared their experiences and insights, enriching the conversation around mental health challenges in the workplace. This collaborative effort underscored the importance of raising awareness and fostering a culture of acceptance and non-discrimination regarding mental health matters.

The Mental Health in the Workplace Awareness program not only equipped employees with essential knowledge but also reinforced the message that mental health is a collective responsibility. As organisations continue to prioritise mental well-being, events like this serve as critical steps toward creating healthier, more supportive workplaces for everyone.
