On the 14 October 2025, the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in collaboration with the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA), Provincial Treasury (PT) as well as the Auditor General South Africa (AGSA) hosted the Support on Oversight, Accountability, and Consequence Management Workshop at Lekwa Local Municipality in Gert Sibande District.
Amongst other things the workshop was focused on:
• Shifting the culture towards performance, accountability, transparency
and institutional integrity in local government;
• Strategies for the reduction of Unauthorized, Irregular, Fruitless, and
Wasteful (UIFW) expenditure;
• Impact of not implementing financial turnaround strategies;
• Importance of workplans for committees and terms of reference;
• The roles and responsibilities of internal structures and functionaries, including Political Office Bearers (POBs) and council committees ;
• Ethical leadership, with a focus on adherence to the Code of Conduct for
Councillors; and
• The Accountability and Consequence Management Framework.
