· All protocol observed
I wish to indicate my humble gratitude to have this opportunity to address this eminent house and the people of our municipality specifically man and women in sports and recreation.
We know that by having Sport Council within the municipality it will assist this community, through sport and recreation, to deal with all the ills of society including crime and criminality, living healthy lifestyles, fighting against drugs and alcohol abuse, fighting the scourge of teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDS as well as becoming active in sport and recreation.
As we’re launching the Lekwa Sport Council today it will be important to reflect on the National Sport and Recreation Plan (NSRP). The NSRP give a background reflecting historically where we come from and some of the significant milestones. It will be of importance for the newly elected Sport Council members to familiarize themselves with this important document as it will assist in making sure that the vision 2020 on Sport and Recreation matters is fully implemented. Lekwa Local Municipality will support Sport Council as an advising body. Your views on development of Lekwa are taken very serious and of importance.
I know that Lekwa Local Municipality is having many active sports clubs and teams but they lack support and equipment. A clear costed programme action has to be developed that will cover the entire Lekwa area of jurisdiction. The Sport Council constitution gives clear terms of reference and it is clear that sport issues cannot be treated as event programmes but ongoing activities that will touch the lives of Lekwa residents.
Further we have national icons like Roy Mahamutsa who have represented us very well nationally and worldwide. We have to recognize and support such icon. We are encouraged by your activism in sport and recreation by involving yourselves in numerous sporting activities in order to develop your sporting skills whilst in the same token contribute meaningful in the development of society. We cannot leave this talent unnoticed!
However, we would like you to establish and strengthen organs of peoples’ power through the establishment strong and strengthening the Local Sports Councils, Schools Sport and any other strategic organ of people’s power to assist to revive and strengthen sport and recreation in our communities.
We want sport veterans to help us to mobilize communities to show interest in sport. We want them to assist by becoming part of the Sport and Recreation mentoring team and transfer their sporting skills to the youth especially the sporting youth in schools and communities. We cannot do this alone, we need collecting efforts and with you will can achieve this. Further we would like the Sport Council that will be launched today to work with communities from street to ward level. Ward Sport Councils should be on your priority list and should actively participate on the Ward War Rooms.
We support the integrated sport programmes that will involve youth, elderly, people living with disabilities and children. We must develop the culture of playing especially to children as they’re the future.
“Together moving Lekwa Forward”
I THANK YOU
