The water supply challenges are a result of limited abstraction capacity following the breakdown of one of the four raw water pumping units on Saturday, 7 February 2026. The malfunction has significantly reduced the municipality’s ability to extract and process sufficient raw water for distribution.
The situation has been further worsened by excessive algae growth in the Vaal River. The algae have been clogging the filtration system at the Standerton Water Treatment Plant, thereby affecting the volume of water that can be purified and supplied to communities.
The municipality is currently working to repair one of the submersible pumping units to restore part of the lost capacity. In addition, the procurement process for two new pumping units is underway, with delivery anticipated during the course of the week. These interventions are expected to improve water production and stabilise supply once fully implemented.
The municipality assures the community that every effort is being made to address the challenges as a matter of urgency.
Further updates will be communicated as progress is made in resolving the matter.
