Lekwa Local Municipality Commences Smart Meters Grant Roll-Out

Aug 6, 2026

Lekwa Local Municipality is pleased to announce the official implementation of the Smart Meters Grant (SMG) Programme, an initiative funded through the National Treasury Municipal Debt Relief Programme aimed at modernising electricity metering infrastructure, improving revenue management and enhancing service delivery to residents and businesses.

As part of the programme, the municipality invites all households and single-phase business customers with damaged, faulty, bypassed, tampered or conventional electricity meters to report their meters and apply for replacement with the new Smart Meters.

MMC for Budget and Treasury (BTO) Cllr. Thabang Motaung stated that residents who previously registered under the Municipality’s Electricity Meter Amnesty Programme are further advised that the installation of Smart Meters for qualifying beneficiaries will commence in accordance with the approved implementation plan.

Objectives of the Smart Meters Grant Programme

The programme is designed to:

  • Improve billing accuracy and promote fair and transparent electricity consumption charges.
  • Enhance customer service and operational efficiency through advanced metering technology.
  • Strengthen the reliability and sustainability of the municipality’s electricity distribution network.

The successful implementation of the programme will contribute significantly to the municipality’s efforts to improve financial sustainability while ensuring efficient and reliable electricity services for all consumers.

MMC Motaung has urged all residents and business owners to cooperate fully with authorised municipal officials and the appointed service provider during meter inspections and installation processes. For security purposes, all officials and contractors engaged in the project will carry valid identification cards.

“We urge our community to support this project as it seeks to modernize the municipality’s electricity management to ensure reliability and sustainability as it will also empower them to manage their own consumption while it will reduce electricity loses and thereby improve revenue collection,” he said.

Members of the public are encouraged to monitor the municipality’s official communication platforms for updates regarding installation schedules, affected areas and other important programme announcements.
