Lekwa Local Municipality recently hosted the Older Persons Forum, led the Chairperson for Older Persons Forum, Mrs. Thembi Motaung, to discuss challenges affecting senior citizens within the municipality and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in addressing their needs.
The forum brought together representatives from various government departments and civil society organisations to discuss interventions aimed at improving the well-being of older persons. The engagement also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to outline their respective roles and responsibilities in ensuring that senior citizens receive the necessary support, care and protection.
During the meeting, representatives from various older persons’ homes raised concerns relating to housing and settlement matters, access to social services, healthcare, funding and donations, and other social challenges affecting the elderly. These concerns highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts among government departments and relevant stakeholders to promote the dignity, safety and well-being of older persons.
In response to the housing-related concerns, the municipality highlighted the ongoing verification process of the older persons’ housing settlement register. Through the Human Settlements Division, beneficiaries who were previously allocated houses but have not yet received them are encouraged to come forward for assistance and verification of their details.
The municipality also emphasised the importance of ensuring that eligible older persons are registered for indigent support to improve their access to municipal services and ease the financial burden on vulnerable households.
Lekwa Local Municipality remains committed to working with relevant government departments, civil society organisations and community structures to address the challenges faced by older persons and ensure that their needs remain a priority in service delivery initiatives.
