Executive Mayor, Cllr. Sifiso Mngemezulu, convened a feedback meeting with local SMMEs regarding the Tournee Powerlines Pty Ltd Solar PV Project, which is set to be constructed in Thuthukani, Ward 12.The purpose of the meeting was to address concerns raised by local SMMEs and communities who expressed dissatisfaction about not being included or benefiting from the project, particularly in terms of employment opportunities and business participation.
The feedback session follows grievances raised by local stakeholders who felt that local SMMEs were not adequately considered in the project, employment opportunities were not fairly extended to members of the local community and there was insufficient communication and consultation with relevant structures. It was noted that the first consultative meeting with Tournee Powerlines Pty Ltd was held on 18 August 2025 to initiate discussions on project implementation and community involvement.
In his address, Executive Mayor Mngemezulu reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the Lekwa community benefits inclusively from the Solar PV Project. He stated:
“I hear and acknowledge all the concerns raised. I assure you that we will revisit and thoroughly review the current process to ensure fairness and compliance. Proposals must be developed and submitted so that local SMMEs and communities have a clear opportunity to participate.”
The meeting was also graced by the attendance of MMC for Budget and Treasury Cllr. Thabang Motaung, MMC for Planning and Economic Development Cllr. Sesana Masondo and Cllr. Sbusiso Ngqulunga.
The Executive Mayor concluded by encouraging ongoing dialogue to ensure transparent processes and equitable benefits for all residents of Lekwa.
