The Provincial Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environment Affairs together with Lekwa Local Municipality commemorated the World Environment Day under the theme “Taking Action Against Climate Change” aimed at addressing pressing realities and effects of climate change. The programme was headed by MEC Khethiwe Moeketsi joined by Lekwa LM Executive Mayor, Cllr. Sifiso Mngemezulu.
Activities commenced at Zikhetheleni Secondary School, where Smart Agriculture Boxes were handed over and a food garden was established to strengthen and supplement the school’s nutrition programme. The initiative aims to enhance food security while introducing learners to sustainable agricultural practices.
The leadership then proceeded to Igugulabasha Primary School, where 30 smart agricultural boxes and seedlings were handed over. The visit also included an oversight inspection of the Air Quality Monitoring Station, on the school’s premises.
The commemoration concluded at Sakhile Stadium, where various government departments and stakeholders showcased environmental awareness exhibits focused on greening initiatives, waste management, environmental conservation, and public health protection. Small-scale local farmers also received agricultural support packages and donations
Addressing attendees, MEC Moeketsi emphasised how localised adaptation strategies can protect both livelihoods and community health against Climate Change. She said through interactive educational showcases, community members can be empowered with actionable eco-friendly habits, such as reducing waste, planting indigenous trees, and practicing water conservation.
