Lekwa Local Municipality Condemns Infrastructure Vandalism

Jan 26, 2026

Lekwa Local Municipality has experienced a surge in incidents of vandalism over the past week in Ward 3 and 6. These acts of vandalism targeted critical electrical infrastructure, where mini substations were damaged and electrical conductors and cables were stolen, resulting in service disruptions to affected communities.

On 25 January 2026, the municipality, working with the South African Police Service (SAPS), successfully tracked individuals suspected of being involved in these criminal activities. As a result of this joint operation, five suspects were arrested and detained at the Sakhile Police Station.

The Acting Municipal Manager Mr Mthembeni Jiyane strongly condemned the vandalism, stating:

“The vandalism of municipal infrastructure not only disrupts essential services but also places a financial burden on the municipality. The municipality commends the swift action by SAPS and our municipal officials in apprehending the suspects and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement to protect public assets.”

The municipality reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding infrastructure and ensuring uninterrupted service delivery to residents. The community is urged to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activities or acts of vandalism affecting municipal infrastructure to the nearest police station.
