Lekwa LM Strengthens Water Infrastructure Through Ward 5 Reservoir Project

Jul 10, 2026

The Executive Mayor Cllr. Sifiso Mngemezulu, engaged with SASOL as part of the official introduction of the service provider responsible for implementing the Ward 5 Reservoir Construction Project.

The project is necessitated by the need to construct a 5-megalitre water reservoir, which is expected to improve reliable water supply to the communities of Ward 5, including Palama, Extension 2 and Crossroad. The initiative seeks to address longstanding water challenges that have affected these communities for approximately 15 years.

Following the engagement with SASOL, the Executive Mayor proceeded to Ward 5 to conduct a public consultation with community members. The consultation served as a platform to provide residents with detailed information about the project, its implementation process, and the anticipated benefits to the community.

Addressing residents, the Executive Mayor announced that the construction of the reservoir is scheduled to commence on 3 August 2026. He further emphasised that the project should create meaningful opportunities for the local community, with priority given to Ward 5 residents for employment and the participation of local small businesses throughout the implementation phase.

“I want the communities of Ward 5, as the beneficiaries of this project, to closely observe the recruitment and appointment processes and ensure that there are no disruptions to the implementation of this project. This development is for the betterment of your ward, and it is important that the community works together to protect and support it,” said Executive Mayor Cllr. Sifiso Mngemezulu.

The Ward 5 Reservoir Construction Project forms part of the Public-Private Partnership commitment to strengthening water infrastructure, improving access to reliable water services, and enhancing the quality of life for residents. Through these strategic partnerships with stakeholders such as SASOL, the municipality continues to invest in sustainable infrastructure that supports economic growth, creates local opportunities, and delivers lasting benefits to communities.
