Lekwa local Municipality Energy Saving competition 2026

As part of its commitment to promoting responsible energy consumption and supporting the national energy efficiency drive, Lekwa Local Municipality, in partnership with the Department of Energy, embarked on an Energy Saving Campaign and Awareness Programme targeting primary schools across the municipality.

The initiative aimed to educate learners and communities about the importance of using electricity responsibly, reducing energy consumption, and understanding the dangers associated with electricity. Under the theme “Save Electricity, Save Money, Save Lives,” primary schools within the jurisdiction of Lekwa Local Municipality were invited to participate in awareness competitions.

Participating schools were required to design posters and prepare presentations demonstrating practical ways to save electricity at home and at school, while also highlighting the dangers of unsafe electricity usage.

The winners of the competition were announced today, 24 June 2026, during a prize-giving ceremony held at the Mayor’s Parlour The ceremony was attended by the Executive Mayor, educators and municipal officials Executive Mayor, Sifiso Mngemezulu, congratulated all participating schools for their creativity, enthusiasm, and commitment to promoting energy-saving practices. He encouraged learners to become ambassadors of energy efficiency in their homes and communities.

 

The winning schools received certificates and prizes as follows:                IMG 9876

1st Place: Nyandeni Primary School – Prizes to the value of R20,000

2nd Place: Lindilanga Primary School – Prizes to the value of R12,000

3rd Place: Igugulabasha Primary School – Prizes to the value of R8,000

4th Place: Ulwazi Primary School – Prizes to the value of R5,000

5th Place: Early Bird Primary School – Prizes to the value of R3,000

Lekwa Local Municipality extends its appreciation to all participating schools, educators, learners, and partners who contributed to the success of the programme. Through initiatives such as these, the municipality continues to promote energy conservation and build a generation that understands the importance of using electricity safely and efficiently.
