As part of its continued commitment to promoting literacy and empowering communities, the Lekwa Local Municipality hosted the South African Library Week which started 16 March until 22 March 2026 under the inspiring theme, “Reclaiming Knowledge, Empowering Futures.” The outreach programme took place at Basizeni Daycare Centre in Morgenzon.
The initiative aimed at introducing children to the magic of books, through engaging storytelling sessions and interactive acting activities, as it forms part of the municipality’s broader vision to promote literacy, and create inclusive platforms where learning is both accessible and enjoyable. By bringing library services directly to community spaces such as daycare centres, the municipality ensures that even the underserved groups are not left behind.
The Principal of Basizeni Daycare Centre, Ms. Thandi Mnisi welcomed the programme, noting its positive impact on the children’s enthusiasm for storytelling sessions, enriched with local narratives while fostering essential language and listening skills.
The Library Week activities also highlight the importance of community collaboration. Librarians, volunteers, and local stakeholders working hand in hand to deliver a meaningful and memorable experience for the children. Their collective efforts demonstrated that empowering futures begins with investing in foundational learning.
