The MMC for Planning and Economic Development, Cllr. Sesana Masondo, welcomed the introduction of two service providers appointed by the Provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements (CoGHSTA) for the implementation of low-cost housing projects within the municipality.
Speaking during the introductory meeting, Manager: Human Settlements, Mr. Mazwi Tladi, emphasised that this is not a new housing project but rather an intervention aimed at completing housing units that were left incomplete by a previous contractor. He further indicated that the second contractor will focus on constructing houses for beneficiaries who were approved in previous housing programmes and are still awaiting delivery of their units.
The MMC for Community Services and Safety, Cllr. Mapaseka Molaba, highlighted that the intervention is long overdue, noting that some of the affected housing projects have been stalled for more than five years.
The projects will be implemented across various wards within the municipality, bringing much-needed relief to beneficiaries who have been waiting for the completion of their homes.
The municipality expressed its gratitude to the provincial government for prioritising the completion of existing and incomplete housing units before embarking on the construction of new houses or the allocation of additional housing opportunities.
This phased approach is expected to maximise the value of public investment while ensuring that outstanding commitments to beneficiaries are fulfilled.
