Lekwa LM Executive Mayor Cllr. Sifiso Mngemezulu welcomed the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, David Mahlobo, together with the Executive Mayor of the Gert Sibande District Municipality and Cllr. Walter Mngomezulu, to conduct an oversight inspection of key water and sanitation infrastructure projects.
The visit forms part of the Department’s ongoing commitment to monitor progress on the Lekwa Ministerial Intervention Programme and assess the implementation of critical infrastructure projects aimed at improving water security, sanitation services, and overall service delivery in the municipality.
The first stop was at the Standerton Water Treatment Works, where upgrades are currently underway. The project which is behind schedule aims to improve the performance of the WTW in order to improve reliability of the bulk water supply to the Standerton network. The second stop of the day was Vaal Sewer Pump which is expected to be handed over to Lekwa LM after completion of upgrade. The final stop was the Lekwa Chambers where DM was giving feedback on the day.
Deputy Minister Mahlobo applauded both municipalities for the work done so far, adding that there is a difference from the last time he had visited.
The Deputy Minister gave a directive that the project should conclude by the end of July. Sewer spillages remain an issue, the DM said remedial actions need to be in place to curb further issues.
