Lekwa Local Municipality in collaboration with Gert Sibande District Municipality, conducted a Gas Pipeline Safety Awareness Campaign in Ward 10 (Vodacom) headed by Cllr. Wilma Venter.
The purpose of the campaign was to educate vulnerable and at risk communities, particularly those residing close to gas pipelines, about the potential dangers and hazards in their surroundings. Residents were sensitised on the risks of gas leaks illegal connections, and activities that may compromise the integrity of the pipelines.
Key stakeholders, including SASOL and Transnet, played a crucial role by sharing valuable information on pipeline safety measures. They also highlighted the importance of adhering to safety regulations and reporting any suspicious activities near pipeline areas.
During the awareness session, community members were encouraged to avoid building structures, refrain from digging without proper authorisation, and to immediately report any gas smells or unusual occurrences to the relevant authorities.
Residents urged to take responsibility for their safety by remaining vigilant and cooperating with authorities to prevent incidents that could result in injury, loss of life, or damage to property.
