Community Safety Forum Takes Action: Clearing Illegal Occupants from Landfill Site

Jun 26, 2024

In an effort to reclaim safety and integrity in communal spaces, the Community Safety Forum has initiated a significant operation aimed at removing illegal occupants from a critical landfill site. headed by the MMC for Community Safety and Services, Cllr Seipati Modise and MMC for Planning and Economic Development Cllr Thabo Sebiloane, this operation
marks an essential moment in addressing community concerns and restoring order in Lekwa Municipality.

The operation involves stakeholders such as AfriForum, South African Police Service (SAPS), Community Policing Forum (CPF), Team Ngenelela, Kasselman Security Services and Lekwa municipality officials.

With the municipality having incurred substantial fines due to neglect in managing the landfill site, settlers were urged to adhere to regulations and refrain from unauthorised activities on the premises such as fires that spread to private farms and, they were advised to utilise the site during operational hours for recycling purposes, thereby promoting sustainable waste management practices.

Cllr Seipati Modise emphasised the importance of reclaiming these public spaces for their intended purposes. “Our priority is to ensure that our communities have safe environment where they can live and thrive. Illegal occupation of public spaces not only violates the law but also disrupts the safety of the neighbourhoods,” she stated.

The operation follows a meticulously planned strategy to ensure its effectiveness and legality. Comprehensive assessments of the site have been conducted, taking into account environmental impact considerations and the logistical challenges of eviction processes. Legal protocols are being strictly adhered to, with clear guidelines for the humane treatment of individuals affected by the eviction.

MMC Sebiloane concluded, stating: “The operation to remove illegal occupants from the landfill site shows proactive community leadership and collaboration among various stakeholders. By addressing the root causes of safety concerns and environmental risks, the Community Safety Forum not only protects public spaces but also strengthens community resilience and unity. As the operation progresses, continued support and vigilance from all stakeholders will be crucial in achieving lasting positive outcomes for Lekwa Municipality.”
