15 April 2025, Standerton – In a meaningful gesture of support towards environmental sustainability and social upliftment, the Executive Mayor of Lekwa Local Municipality, Cllr Sifiso Mngemezulu, accompanied by the MMC for Community Services and Safety, Cllr Maphaseka Molaba, officially accepted and handed over a donation to the Standerton landfill waste pickers today. The generous donation came from the Metal Packaging Association of South Africa (Metpac-SA).
The event was attended by various sector departments, Lekwa Local Municipality officials, and representatives from Metpac-SA. The occasion marked a collaborative effort to recognise and empower waste pickers who play a crucial role in the local recycling economy.
Metpac-SA, a leading advocate for environmental sustainability, operates in alignment with the principles of the circular economy. The organisation focuses on reducing waste and promoting recycling through responsible environmental practices, both among producers and consumers.
As part of their ongoing commitment, Metpac-SA donated essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including water boots, gloves, overalls, goggles, hats, cloth masks, and five large wheel trolleys. Beyond physical support, Metpac-SA is also facilitating the registration of Standerton’s waste pickers onto the national trading system and assisting in formalising their service fees, ensuring recognition and income for their work.
During his keynote address, Executive Mayor Mngemezulu extended heartfelt gratitude to Metpac-SA for their support and vision. He also commended Miss Madisha, Lekwa’s Waste Manager, for her outstanding work at the landfill site.
“We are proud to say that Lekwa is 100% compliant. This is a milestone worth celebrating. It shows that there are dedicated individuals making a living while also contributing to a cleaner, greener environment,” the Mayor stated.
This initiative reflects a powerful partnership between government, industry, and community members, highlighting a shared responsibility in advancing sustainable development and dignifying the work of waste pickers in Lekwa.
