In a bid to empower beneficiaries of government subsidised housing, on the 27th February 2025 Lekwa Local Municipality together with Mpumalanga Department of Human Settlement hosted a Housing Consumer Education Programme. The event took place at Thusong Centre in Sakhile and brought together community members and beneficiaries of subsidised housing.
In his welcoming remarks, Cllr. Smanga Ngwenya encouraged residents to increase their participation in programmes of this nature as they seek to make them understand their roles and responsibilities as home owners and empower them on how to further develop their houses as assets.
The Housing Consumer Education Programme is an initiative designed to provide important knowledge, rights, responsibilities, and expectations to those who have received government housing subsidies. The primary aim of the program is to ensure that beneficiaries understand how to take proper care of their homes, maintain them and make informed decisions regarding housing services.
Participants were provided with crucial information about maintaining their properties, ensuring that they know how to keep their homes in good condition, as well as how to manage any issues that may arise in the future.
